Luxembourg has initiated its first-ever nationwide drinking water vigilance phase due to prolonged high temperatures and insufficient rainfall, which have led to increased water consumption and mounting stress on public water supplies. The government activated this alert as a preventive measure to safeguard drinking water reserves and avert potential shortages. Although the national effort currently hinges on voluntary cooperation, various municipalities have already implemented mandatory restrictions on water use.
In the city of Esch-sur-Alzette, local authorities have imposed stringent measures to curb non-essential water usage. These measures ban activities such as washing cars outside of professional facilities, cleaning pavements and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and ornamental ponds, operating fountains that do not recirculate water, cooling food or drinks under running water, and watering parks, sports fields, and other green spaces, except for newly planted areas. Businesses that depend on water for their operations are not subject to these restrictions. Breaching local regulations could lead to fines ranging from €25 to €250.
The Water Administration has also sounded the alarm over critically low river levels throughout the country. To address this, water extraction from rivers is currently prohibited nationwide, with the exception of the Moselle River.
Authorities have urged residents to adopt water-saving practices, such as taking shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, minimizing garden watering, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor water use. Officials emphasized that these conservation efforts are vital to prevent the imposition of stricter restrictions should dry conditions persist.
