Luxembourg City Plans CCTV Expansion in Response to Security Concerns

by admin477351

Luxembourg City is moving forward with plans to enhance video surveillance in its central areas, as Mayor Lydie Polfer has requested approval from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden for the installation of CCTV cameras. This initiative, which aims to boost security, has already received preliminary backing from the municipal council, though the specific number and locations of the cameras are yet to be determined.

The decision on the placement of these cameras will be guided by an assessment of security needs conducted by the police, who will identify key areas that require monitoring. Mayor Polfer emphasized that while CCTV cannot prevent all criminal activity, it serves as a valuable tool for investigators in identifying suspects and piecing together the details of incidents.

This proposal follows recent expansions of surveillance systems in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, areas that have seen an uptick in security issues and reported crimes, according to Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer. Bauer noted that the city is committed to equipping the police with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.

Local business owners and residents have been vocal in their support for increased surveillance, citing concerns over pickpocketing and other offenses. They believe that the presence of CCTV cameras could not only aid police investigations by providing crucial footage but also serve as a deterrent to potential criminals.
