Vietnam and Switzerland are set to strengthen their bilateral relations, focusing on trade, investment, and technological cooperation. This commitment was underscored by Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh during an event in Bern commemorating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Vice President Thanh emphasized the importance Vietnam places on its relationship with Switzerland, acknowledging the latter’s support during critical periods in Vietnam’s history. She noted the growth in bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including politics, education, science, and innovation, as well as people-to-people exchanges. Thanh highlighted opportunities for deeper collaboration, particularly in areas where Switzerland excels and Vietnam requires development, such as science, technology, and innovation.

Economic collaboration remains a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Switzerland relationship, with annual trade surpassing $2 billion. Over 100 Swiss companies have invested in Vietnam in industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia recognized the significant expansion of bilateral cooperation since Vietnam’s economic reforms, acknowledging Switzerland’s role in supporting Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development.

Further strengthening of ties is anticipated with the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the conclusion of free trade agreement negotiations between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association. Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh highlighted these milestones as pivotal in enhancing bilateral relations.

Both nations see potential in expanding collaboration in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development, building on their longstanding friendship and mutual economic interests.
