Google DeepMind is undergoing a significant leadership reshuffle as Sir Demis Hassabis steps down from his role as chief executive. Hassabis, who co-founded the AI research unit in 2010, will transition to the position of chair while also assuming a new role as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This change allows him to shift his focus from daily management to concentrating on long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer, will succeed Hassabis as the head of DeepMind, adopting the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this move would enable him to dedicate more time to the broader development of advanced AI technologies, ensuring they are beneficial to humanity. Additionally, he will maintain his role as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery company spun off from DeepMind.
The leadership transition coincides with the departure of several senior AI engineers from Google. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to start their own venture, Discovery Loop, which will explore machine learning, science, and engineering research. These exits are set against a backdrop of mounting competition in the AI sector.
As the race for advanced artificial intelligence heats up, Google is facing stiff competition from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have made notable progress in AI models and coding technologies.
