Spotify is implementing a new co-pilot model for its leadership, with founder Daniel Ek transitioning from the role of CEO to executive chairman. This move elevates two of his most trusted executives, Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, to the position of co-CEOs, where they will jointly steer the company.
The change, which takes place on January 1st, is a formal recognition of the roles Söderström and Norström have been playing since 2023 as co-presidents. Söderström’s expertise in product and technology complements Norström’s deep understanding of the business, creating a well-rounded leadership team.
The company has stressed the element of continuity in this transition. By formalizing an existing operational structure, Spotify aims to ensure a seamless handover of daily responsibilities. Ek confirmed he had already delegated much of this work, making the new titles a natural progression.
In his new capacity, Ek will act as a strategic guide, focusing on long-term opportunities and challenges. He highlighted his intention to be an active chairman, driving Spotify’s agenda in areas like artificial intelligence and expansion into new global markets, and representing the company to key stakeholders.
This leadership evolution prepares Spotify for its next stage of growth. The co-pilot model at the top, supported by the founder’s long-range vision, provides a robust framework for navigating the complexities of the global audio market.
