Experts are explaining the “inflammation highway” that leads from your mouth to your heart. The end result can be hardened arteries (atherosclerosis), and it all starts with bacteria that your old toothbrush can’t control.
A dental expert warns that the 700 species of bacteria in your mouth form plaque. This plaque causes gum inflammation. This inflammation is the gateway for “bacteria and inflammatory molecules” to enter the bloodstream.
Once in the bloodstream, they can travel to the heart. “Chronic gum inflammation… can cause arteries to stiffen and narrow,” the expert explains. This is atherosclerosis, and it puts immense strain on your cardiovascular system.
This constant, low-grade inflammation “wears down the heart’s defenses.” This is why gum disease is linked to a nearly doubled risk of heart disease. It also fuels the “vicious cycle” of diabetes.
To protect your heart, you must control the inflammation. The rule is to replace your toothbrush every three months. An old, frayed brush is ineffective and allows the plaque to build up, starting this dangerous chain reaction.
