Italy Provides Financial Support to Truckers, Farmers, Fishers Amid Fuel Price Protests

by admin477351

The Italian government has approved a financial assistance package for truck drivers, farmers, and fishers adversely affected by rising fuel prices, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced. This move comes amid escalating protests by truckers in southern Italy, which have disrupted deliveries and led to shortages in shops and markets.

Prime Minister Meloni condemned acts of intimidation and illegal road blockades that have accompanied the protests, stressing that such actions will not be tolerated. She emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the free movement of goods while respecting the right to peaceful demonstrations. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has been tasked with responding to requests from transport, farming, and retail associations to ensure that supplies reach consumers and businesses.

The government is also taking steps to prevent price speculation that could exacerbate the impact of supply disruptions on households and businesses. Meloni indicated that legal measures, including the criminalization of road blockades, would be employed to address these issues.

In addition to ongoing support for road transport associations, the newly approved measures extend financial aid to farmers and fishers. Meloni highlighted that disruptions in transport networks primarily impact ordinary citizens, workers, and businesses, and reiterated the government’s commitment to engaging with peaceful protesters to address fuel cost challenges and protect essential supply chains.
