Iran has raised allegations against Qatar, accusing it of hindering investigations into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who reportedly went missing during a recent conflict. The claims have been met with firm denials from Qatar, which insists it is not detaining the pilots. An official from Iran’s armed forces, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, stated that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been waiting for months to secure permission to travel to Qatar for an investigation. He called on Doha to permit the team’s visit and appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross for assistance in pursuing the case.
Iran has previously noted it recovered the remains of pilot Majid Kazemi, who died during an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has categorically denied the detention of the Iranian pilots. Al-Ansari explained that the pilots had allegedly violated Qatari airspace, prompting defensive measures after attempts to communicate with them went unanswered. Qatar also claimed its search and rescue teams were actively engaged in operations to locate the pilots and any remains.
According to Qatari authorities, they had coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of the remains of one pilot and had extended an invitation to Iran in April to dispatch a team to review information about the search and rescue operations. However, Qatar reported that Iran had not responded to this invitation. This situation unfolds amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other nations following the outbreak of conflict earlier this year.
