Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has reiterated the country’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing that aiding Kyiv is crucial for the security of Europe. His reaffirmation comes amid internal political disagreements within Italy’s ruling coalition.
Speaking at a meeting of the E5 group of defence ministers in Paris, Crosetto stressed that Italy’s commitment to Ukraine is rooted in its international responsibilities, encompassing obligations to the European Union and NATO. He cautioned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine presents a significant threat to European security.
Crosetto elaborated that Italy’s assistance to Ukraine should be perceived not merely as support for another nation but as a strategic investment in Europe’s future and collective security. He assured that Italy will continue its support within its means.
These statements follow a recent clash within Italy’s government, as Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani opposed Transport Minister Matteo Salvini’s suggestion to halt military aid to Ukraine. The disagreement highlights the differing opinions within the coalition on the approach to the conflict in Ukraine.
