PAL-V, a Dutch company, has received the green light from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to commence the production of aviation components for its Liberty flying car. This approval is a significant milestone in bringing the three-wheeled Liberty closer to becoming commercially operational. The company is now poised to manufacture parts necessary for the aircraft aspect of the vehicle, marking a crucial step towards its eventual certification as an aircraft, which is anticipated by 2028.
The Liberty flying car is a unique hybrid, combining the features of a road vehicle with the capability of flight through a retractable rotor and propeller system. While it functions like a regular car on the road, the rotor can be deployed for airborne travel. However, unlike helicopters that can take off vertically, the Liberty requires a runway for both takeoff and landing. This dual functionality necessitates that operators possess both a driving and a pilot’s license.
The vehicle boasts a road speed capability of approximately 160 km/h and offers an estimated flight range of about 500 km. Priced at around €299,000 before taxes and additional costs, the Liberty has already generated strong interest, with the first 250 units sold. Notably, the Dutch fire brigade is among the early adopters who have placed orders for this innovative vehicle.
With the EASA’s approval for component production now secured, the next pivotal challenge for PAL-V is to achieve full aircraft certification for the Liberty. Once this certification is obtained, expected by 2028, the flying car could be ready to take to the skies, potentially transforming personal and emergency transportation. As the company progresses towards this goal, it continues to capture the imagination of those eager to see flying cars become a reality.
