by admin477351

Austria is contemplating participation in Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as both nations aim to enhance their defense and security collaboration. The consideration follows a meeting in Luxembourg between Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner and her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes, where they discussed expanding partnerships in defense, space, and cybersecurity sectors.

During the visit, Tanner also engaged with satellite operator SES to explore Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. She emphasized the increasing importance of secure satellite communications in the context of rising geopolitical tensions. Tanner noted that stronger cooperation in this area would bolster the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.

The GovSat 2 project is intended to deliver secure communication services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and partner nations. The satellite is slated for launch in 2029, marking a significant step in the region’s defense capabilities.

In addition to satellite communications, Austria and Luxembourg signed a letter of intent to enhance cooperation in various defense-related domains, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. However, Austria has yet to disclose how much it might invest should it decide to join the GovSat 2 initiative.
