Australia secured a decisive 3-1 victory over Poland in Brisbane, advancing to the penultimate round of the Davis Cup. Alex de Minaur, ranked world No. 9, clinched the victory with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 win against Kamil Majchrzak at Pat Rafter Arena.
De Minaur’s win followed an earlier singles triumph against Maks Kasnikowski, showcasing his consistent form throughout the competition. The Australian team had already established a strong position in the tie thanks to an impressive doubles performance by Max Purcell and Rinky Hijikata.
Purcell and Hijikata overcame the Polish duo of Jan Zielinski and Karol Drzewiecki with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win in just 77 minutes. Purcell’s powerful returns and two aces during the first-set tiebreak were pivotal in securing the advantage, while Hijikata maintained composure to hold his serve, allowing the team to break Poland’s serve in the second set.
Australia’s victory was significant, coming on the heels of a loss to Ecuador that had put them under pressure to perform against Poland. The team must now face a qualifying round next year to secure a spot in the 2027 Davis Cup Finals in Italy.
