Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the shared challenges faced by both countries as small states with limited domestic markets and scarce natural resources. He noted that their openness and international connectivity have allowed them to evolve into vital financial and business hubs for larger regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic interconnections, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. The two nations are also focused on enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. Both Singapore and Luxembourg advocate for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, during his official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, engaged in discussions with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their conversations centered on geopolitical developments and strategies to bolster stability, predictability, and the adherence to the rule of law. This visit commemorates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg, underscoring their long-standing ties.
The establishment of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore was highlighted as a significant indication of its determination to enhance engagement with both Singapore and the broader region. Prime Minister Frieden is also slated to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address Europe’s role and autonomy amidst a shifting global landscape.
